Buka
Buka's whiskey packaging pays tribute to Taíno culture through modern interpretations of their symbols.
The Buka project focuses on designing whiskey packaging that honors the cultural heritage of the Taínos, the indigenous people of the Caribbean. The packaging incorporates Taíno symbols, specifically the stamps they used to tattoo themselves and mark their tribal affiliation, as a central element. These symbols are reimagined in the label design, the relief on the bottle, and the glass cap, creating a modern tribute to the Taíno culture. The name "Buka," meaning "You Are" in Taíno, emphasizes identity and connection, reflecting the project’s goal of revitalizing the bond with Taíno heritage. By blending traditional art with contemporary design, the packaging brings attention to Caribbean cultural heritage and highlights its importance in today’s world.
The bottle not only contains whiskey but serves as a symbolic object, allowing consumers to engage with their cultural roots through the act of interaction. This approach transforms the packaging into an immersive experience that connects individuals to the Taíno legacy, fostering pride and reflection on their heritage. Ultimately, Buka is more than just a product; it is a celebration of identity, history, and the enduring cultural significance of the Taíno people.
